Abracadabra. Today is Halloween. All Saints Day, All Hallows Eve when parties are made and the dead come to life. And a lot of parties there will be today; uptown, downtown and all around town. And what is the difference between uptown and downtown? Is downtown more down and uptown more up? Well if you happen to be looking to paint the town red and are in the Uptown San Marco Shopping District, there will most likely be lots of parties and lots of St. Augustine shopping to be had on this day and throughout the year. St Augustine is an antique shopping district located in the Nation’s Oldest City of St. Augustine, Florida along San Marco Avenue. There you can find history, attraction. culture, luxury and romance, beaches and nature, golf and more. Uptown Saturday Night in St. Augustine also has a great end of the month event October 27th and November 24th, in the Uptown San Marco shopping district. San Marco Avenue is a lively street and there you can find Spanish treasures, galleries, antique stores, rare books, Ripley’s Museum, the Mission of Nobre de Dios and more. And you can also attend exhibit openings and meet the artists, attend book readings and signings, see live music, meet antique dealers and attend their workshops and a host of other creative events in this festive atmosphere. Aviles Street, the oldest street in America is nearby as well. This is a sponsored post.![]()
Mitch’s Picks
Hey Bloggers, and so in my attempt to follow the latest of the WBAI radio drama series, I came across this email from Mitchell Cohen on one of the many yahoo groups that I have subscribed to lately. Mitchell Cohen has this really cool radio program, Steal This Radio that rocks and is full of great listening. The following are some of Mitchell’s most recent picks. You can listen live for his latest picks of music, poetry and everything else tonight at 6pm on Tribeca Radio. And Mitchell also has his picks for the WBAI 2007 LSB elections that can be found on Indymedia. WBAI elections are happening now and for once might change the direction of the station! Power to the people. Peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind.
STEAL THIS RADIO #23
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2007, 11 a.m., and
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 6 pm
on Tribeca Radio (Listen Live)
Archived/Podcast after Oct. 30.
Much music and poetry in this week’s show!
Mitchel Cohen recites his poem, “To Comrades Fallen”, for Brad Will and Susan Blake.
Mitchel also gives his picks for the WBAI radio (99.5 FM) listener-member elections to the Local Station Board, and discusses some of the troubles at that listener-sponsored commercial-free Pacifica station.
And, sandwiched by much great music by Manu Chao, Anne Feeney, Dave Rovics, and Phil Ochs, Mitchel reads Henry Miller’s insights and reminiscences about the doctrine of cleanliness. Mitchel ends with another one of his poems “Be Sure to Wear A Condom when You’re Shooting Up (Stay at Home)”. Don’t go outside, don’t do ANYthing, stay home and watch TV ….
Music:
Manu Chao: “Clandestino, ” “Desaparecido, ” and Bongo Bong
Anne Feeney: “Let Their Heads Roll,” and “Too Much Monkey Business”
Phil Ochs: “I Ain’t a-Marchin’ Anymore” , and “The War Is Over”
Dave Rovics: “Jenin”
and, opening every show, Mario Savio’s impromptu 1964 speech “Unless You’re Free the Machine will be Prevented from Working at All,” which summed up and immortalized the Berkeley Free Speech Movement and — along with the Civil Rights organizing in the South — kicked off the student movements all across the United States.![]()
Mercury In Retrograde
And so I heard someone say the other day, planet Mercury is in retrograde. And I think that means watch out for what you do and what you say as things can get wacky left and right and life can become like that karma thing of Murphy’s Law, “Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”. I don’t know how long mercury has been in retrograde or if what that person said is even correct, as I have not seen any of its affects in the immediate world I have been inhabiting lately. Or maybe I have seen Mercury’s effects lately, I am not sure. And what does Mercury being in retrograde mean anyway? Well from what I hear, Mercury is the God of communication and war I think. Doesn’t those medical staffs that fly away on the wings of love have something to do with Mercury; those snakes and that all seeing eye that sees all thing. And doesn’t Mercury being in retrograde have to do with communication being out of whack? Does everything technology just stop working or go backwards. Well this computer seems to be working great so far today. And what else does Mercury in retrograde have to do with? The planet goes backward or something so everything else in life goes backwards until it decides to go forward again. What ever this retrograde thing may mean, have a great Mercury in retrograding day.![]()
In A Vanity World
Oh boy, it’s my plastic self time again. This is a good one. What can I say about plastic surgery except that can I afford it even if I wanted it? Or maybe my insurance could cover it. It’s a plastic world sometimes and the world can be vain, very vain. There can be certain features about oneself that one is not fully content with and would like to swap with another person maybe. Or maybe you are fortunately content with yourself. If you happen to feel you could use a different more marketable self just like in the movies, as Hollywood can be based solely on looks sometimes, or maybe for some other reasons, UK Plastic Surgery is there for you. MYA Cosmetic Surgery UK can make yourself amazing. They can help you feel confident about yourelf. They are all cosmetic surgery all the time. This is a sponsored post.![]()
This Blog
And so in my attempt to market this blog and blah blog my way to riches in the pay you to post and blog and make millions and billions online in the bloggerland blogosphere, someone left a comment on my “Sell This Product” posting yesterday that went like, “yer blog sucks and you are an adwhore.”. Now that leads me to wondering, what is an ad whore? Is that the same as a marketing whore. Does that Internet bible dictionary Wikipedia have a definition for that. Is that someone who is a whore for marketing, as the word sounds self explanatory. And I do seem to find myself lost in Bloggerland these days, as I am forever trying to figure out how to get rich Internet quick without ever having to leave home. And I do long for that Google page ranking of a thousand so much that I would like to repost this Ode To Blogging. And I am forever reading about that newly learned Internet marketing term “SEO”, as in optimize this site for those search engines; so much that I find myself cramming this site with every noun, verb, and place I can think of. And I am still forever trying to figure out ways to market, promote and build links for that link popularity thing for this blog to reach a bazillion readers a day. And I don’t think I will be getting rich Internet quick anytime soon with my one blog, as I still find myself blogging for pennies a day. And short of winning the lottery, I realize I cannot quit my day job anytime soon. And I have posted on every forum and quorum I can think of trying to advertise this blog. And short of walking around with a billboard attached too myself and a bullhorn in my hand yelling out my websites name, I am running out of ideas on how to market this blog. Maybe I should try skywriting in the sky with an airplane, or maybe I should read that 27 + 1 Tips for Building and Maintaining a Blog Audience again, or look for some more of those endless how to make millions online blogs, tutorials and manuals to read now. And what does the term “riches” mean anyway? Silver, gold and treasures, do you trust in them. And what if they perish. What profit do you have if you gain the whole world and lose your own soul. That could be a whole another blog posting. And what about that verse; “For the love of money is the root of all evil: while some have coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows”. And how do bloggers get thousands and millions and billions of page views a day? I still have yet to figure that one out. Is there a magic trick to all of this? This blogging in a web 2.0 world, user generated content thing has got me going. Have a great day![]()
Ballad For A Radio Drama
And the ballots are in. Or at least arriving in the mail now. I have been following this Pacifica Foundation WBAI Local Station Board 2007 elections radio drama for a while now. WBAI 99.5 Pacifica Radio is a listener sponsored, community, non commercial radio station in the New York City area that supports free speech and gives an alternative voice to the people. And from hearing all of the drama rama stories, their administration seems to reflect and mirror a microcosm of a current administration as Pacifica network seems to have a history of turmoil and division amongst its members that goes way back in time with its listener sponsored board and its behind the scenes or not so behind the scenes stories on how its radio station functions. And it is seemingly a continuation of a story told many times, many ways, many years ago. And now the candidate election endorsements and recommendations are being posted on all of these yahoo groups and social web 2.0 software that I have subscribed to and have been reading and watching lately in an attempt to follow this radio drama online. And the discussions and emails are so many that ones inbox can fill up quickly so much that it sometimes becomes seemingly impossible to follow them all. So the following are some email excerpts that I received today from that New Pacifica Yahoo Group and some of the many tons of email groups that are to be found in the ongoing WBAI radio drama. If you happen to be interested in following this drama also, you can visit Pacifica Foundation to learn more. Is it possible to help save WBAI and the world? What would be left without the voice of WBAI. Power To The People. Peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind. And what does this have to do with a No Police State?
Hello All,
If you haven’t already received it, you soon will receive your ballot for the WBAI Local Station Board (LSB) 2007 election. Please don’t lose your ballot — vote!
I’m endorsing —
And…
All of the above-named candidates are sincerely committed to helping to right the station by hiring station management that will strengthen & revitalize programming, restore the listener-base and rebuild financial stability.
And…
This is a critical election for WBAI. I believe it is absolutely essential that “So and so” candidates take a majority of the seats on the Local Board if WBAI is to survive, and perhaps even Pacifica itself. As I wrote to you a few weeks ago, WBAI is bankrupt. It is paying its bills by borrowing money from the Pacifica National Office which is borrowing the money from other Pacifica stations. This whole house of cards could come down if the problems at WBAI are not solved quickly
And…
and that is one of the causes of the current bankruptcy. Other causes are overall mis-management, waste, poor staff morale, not enough good programming, and competition from other alternative media sources, both on the radio and on the internet
And…
Again, please vote — Every vote matters. With “ranked choice” voting just one vote can determine who wins the last seat on the board.
Thanks, and best regards,
And…
Dear WBAI Listener-Member,
The ballots flutter in like moths to the flame of our electoral
candle …. They began arriving yesterday. If you’d paid $25 or more
to WBAI in the past year, you should receive your ballot any day now. If you don’t receive it within a week, please call the Local Election Supervisor Dale Ratner.
This year, the elections are VERY important toward the future of
WBAI, and whether the station will continue to exist and be
strengthened, or whether it will be bankrupted by a bunch of “So and so” in the mis-named “So and so” faction who are doing the dirty work of the “So and so” in Washington, whether they are aware of it or not.
And…
I am recommending that we all vote for the following “So and so” candidates for the WBAI Local Station Board, and in the following order (the order is very important in this election):
And…
Hi all. I do a weekly show on WBAI, Thursday evenings… Aside from the fact that we need more programming that more people want to listen to,… and I’ve been doing my show since 1995 – and I barely know anything about the candidates who are running for LSB. How can we expect the listeners to know? How can we run a station well where it’s so easy to game the voting system?
And…
Thanks for speaking this aloud. I agree with most of what you’re saying though I am not completely in agreement with you on the topic of national programming….. But I agree with you all down the line in regard to “So and so”. The way the LSB currently operates warrants its swift abolition. It seems to operate as the long arm of everything corrupt at WBAI and Pacifica.

Op Ed
I’ve been watching and reading about those California wildfires in the news this past week and it is enough to give me visions of Armageddon and make me think that it is the beginning of the end. And I came across this website OpEdNews with this interesting op ed news article written by Mary MacElveen yesterday. And I wanted to comment on it but it seems to be commentary itself. And it seems to be about compassion and humanity. This text stayed with me afterwards so much after reading it that I thought to repost it as follows.
It never surprises me when I see posters on AOL lash out at victims who have lost everything in the California wildfires as they did with Katrina victims. In reading some of these comments one ugly person has the gall to say, “Who friggin cares” and goes onto say, “Enough already!” I just don’t get this mindset. Doesn’t he realize that was someone’s home which included all of their worldly assets? Those assets included items such as family mementos’ which are now lost forever. Yes, I realize they are things, but often things tie us to one another. At family gatherings some will often use these mementos’ to reminisce of past events that were shared collectively. Lost in many of those homes are china sets passed down from generation to generation and as we come up on Thanksgiving, absent will be these sets of china. Native-Americans are known for their custom of oral histories in which family members would gather round to tell of one’s family history so that the next generation knows where they come from. Can using anyone of these items destroyed by fire take away from such a custom? One poster showed absolutely no compassion when he posted, “Katrina improved that trashy city. These people in southen cal are good upstanding hard working people. Its time to help them out America.” I will not even correct his spelling mistakes, but let them stand as is. Having written two columns called “The Voices of Katrina”, those affected by Katrina were also hard working citizens. New Orleans was never a “trashy city” but one that is filled with so much history and culture. This same poster shows his true ugly racist colors when he stated, “I feel bad for the white people that have lost their homes.” He is coming from the depths of hate. Then your typical Republican VS Democrat debate comes in as well as any comments that may come from Rev. Pat Robertson as people’s possessions go up in flames. Please get a grip since those affected by these fires are all of us. As you sit and try to divide, they are clinging together for comfort and giving each other aid when they may have lost everything. In reading all of these diatribes, one person who lives in California had this to add, “I can’t believe ignorant people are posting and bashing Californians, don’t you fools know that wildfires do not discriminate? Rich neighborhoods, average neighborhoods, and poor neighbors from Santa Barbara to San Diego are being burned to the ground. I’ll say it again, the fire does not discriminate. I’m a native Californian, born and raised in So Cal all my life. Wildfires are fairly common down here, but these ones are bad– the worst I’ve ever seen. Everyone in So Cal is effected one way or another– whether it be by the flames or smoke. I go to college in Orange County and our classes are cancelled because of it. This is bad…and the only thing that can help is a shift in the weather.” I could identify with his frustration having read what the ugly people did write. So, below was my response back to him. I first want to say that ignorance seems to rule the day even in these horrific events. I would like to know where people’s compassion is as they lose everything they have worked for. Wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes do not discriminate. They are a force of nature. Those who are bashing Californians are sitting safely in their own homes at their own computers and not realizing that can be taken away from them in an instant. I read similar rants directed at the people of New Orleans and the surrounding areas during Katrina. Many of these ugly people belong to a new generation of heartless people who only care to strike out in ignorance. Those of America’s ‘Greatest Generation’ would have rolled up their sleeves seeing how they could help out. I long for the days when America can be restored to that mindset.
There is an age old saying, “Walk a mile in my shoe” and those who can sit and judge those affected by these fires and Katrina in a negative tone, one must ask this; have you walked a mile in their shoes? Do you know what it is like to lose everything in an instant only to have your misery bashed by others? I think that some Americans need to grow up and seek the advice of those who are still apart of America’s ‘Greatest Generation’. This group of people were the can do Americans and would not have reacted in such a juvenile and hateful manner. To the people of California, my prayers and sympathies go out to you all as they did with those who suffered through Katrina. Seek comfort in those that come to your aid and dismiss the rest who have no heart.![]()
Till’s Gig
I’ve been meaning to blah blog about Till’s gig lately for quite some time now. He’s been sending out those email invites for his latest gig for a while. And he’s been calling those events “Eazy” or “Eazy does it”. Till plays some good music, mostly jazz, as I have always known him as a sax man though now it seems as if he is playing, how does he describe it on his MySpace page; Psychedelic / Electronica / Trip Hop. And this time around he seems to be calling himself Senor Bonobo. I am not exactly sure what that name is all about, maybe it has something to do with me calling myself No Police State Girl sometimes, who knows. There seems to be photos of apes all over his page and I guess that’s what a Bonobo is. And he describes Senor Bonobo as something like “Bonobos are supposed to live a more peaceful lifestyle in part because of their habitat, which has more nutritional vegetation, allowing less hunting, less competition, and a social outlet of eating. Bonobos, at least in captivity, are generally held to have superior intelligence to Common Chimpanzees and so on and so on and so on…” I made it to one of his parties and it was at this really cool loft in Queens with this view of Manhattan that was awesome. Till B’s music rocks and his event for this week is as follows. Have a great rock n’ roll day.
