Technology

And I’m not exactly sure what it means when I start posting USATODAY.com articles titled “2010: The year technology replaced talking”, on this blog in an attempt to maintain content for this blog and my other blog whenever possible. It’s just that hey, maybe it’s less writing sometimes, I think. And so this is one of those articles I came across from someones facebook page throughout my travels in internetland. And though the words may have changed in this following article, the story remains the same.

When someone gets home from work as a New York City book editor, they check their BlackBerry at the door.

“I think we are attached to these devices in a way that is not always positive,” says someone, who’d rather focus at home on their husband and 12-year-old daughter. “It’s there and it beckons. That’s human nature (but) … we kind of get crazy sometimes and we don’t know where it should stop.”

Americans are connected at unprecedented levels — 93% now use cellphones or wireless devices; one-third of those are “smartphones” that allow users to browse the Web and check e-mail, among other things. The benefits are obvious: checking messages on the road, staying in touch with friends and family, efficiently using time once spent waiting around.

The downside: Often, we’re effectively disconnecting from those in the same room.

That’s why, despite all the technology that makes communicating easier than ever, 2010 was the Year We Stopped Talking to One Another. From texting at dinner to posting on facebook from work or checking e-mail while on a date, the connectivity revolution is creating a lot of divided attention, not to mention social angst. Many analysts say it’s time to step back and reassess.

“What we’re going to see in the future is new opportunities for people to be plugged in and connected like never before,” says someone else who studies the social implications of using mobile devices. “It can be a good thing. But I also see new ways the traditional social fabric is getting somewhat torn apart.”

Our days are filled with beeps and pings — many of which pull us away from tasks at hand or face-to-face conversations. We may feel that the distractions are too much, but we can’t seem to stop posting, texting or surfing.

“We’re going through a period of adjustment and rebalancing,” says someone else, principal researcher in socio-digital systems at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England, and author of the new book Texture: Human Expression in the Age of Communications Overload.

And another person, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self in Cambridge, Mass., wants to remind people that technology can be turned off.

“Our human purposes are to really have connections with people,” that person says. “We have to reclaim it. It’s not going to happen naturally.”

Their new book, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other, suggests that the time is right for reassessment. “You have to have experiences with it before you can ask these questions. You can’t ask in the first five years. You have to see how it plays out,” they say.

Their worried about what they see today.

“We’ve come to confuse continual connectivity with making real connections,” they say. “We’re ‘always on’ to everyone. When you actually look more closely, in some ways we’ve lost the time for the conversations that count.”

Connected to your social circle

A sociologist is familiar with dire predictions associated with new technology: They outlined them in a 1992 book America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940.

“If you go back 100 years, people were writing things about the telephone not unlike people are writing about these technologies. There was a whole literature of alarm — how it’s turning everything upside down,” he says.

In a new book, Still Connected: Family and Friends in America Since 1970, this person says the total contact time with friends and family has not changed much in 40 years; there has been a slight decline in face-to-face contact but a substantial increase in other ways of communicating, such as phone and e-mail.

The “major” change is “the idea that you are available to everybody in your social circle at every minute and they are available to you,” this person says. “What its consequences and implications are, we don’t know.”

A Social psychologist is among those studying our relationship with technology. “At any moment, you’re dividing your attention between the person in front of you and the person you’re giving snippets of your attention to. We don’t know the net consequence of reducing the quality of the relationship a little bit with the person you’re with while improving or maintaining it with the person you’re electronically tied to.”

That psychologist says, “Some researchers do worry that connections to other people elsewhere are weakening the connections to people you’re with.”

A director of the Center for Mobile Communication Studies at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., and editor of Mobile Communication: Dimensions of Social Policy says “There’s no question that these mobile gadgets are affecting our behavior. There is not a uniform declaration that everyone agrees to as to what this change means. Everybody sees merits and demerits, but whether the effect is good or bad is hotly contested.”

That person says mobile phones provide opportunities to coordinate social activities more easily.

“The more people use mobile phones, the more likely they are to see friends and family because it strengthens those relationships,” he says. “It doesn’t take away from how much we see our friends, but it can take away from the quality of the time we spend with people when we’re physically together and using the technology with others.”

The statistics paint a clear picture of dramatic increases in mobile devices. According to a semi-annual wireless survey released in October by the industry trade group CTIA-The Wireless Association, 93% of Americans now use a wireless device or cellphone — and not just for voice calls.

From June 2009 to June 2010, subscribers sent 1.8 trillion text messages (up 33% from the previous year) and 56.3 billion multimedia messages (up 187% from the year before). In its latest monthly report, the Nielsen Co. found that almost 30% of mobile subscribers in the USA have a smartphone such as a BlackBerry or iPhone.

“Mobile telephony is becoming ubiquitous, with access to mobile networks now available to over 90% of the global population,” says the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency.

That person also says Americans feel these changes so profoundly because we’re just now “truly experiencing this kind of critical mass.”

“It’s not just about the adoption level being high, but this technology has really worked its way into our everyday lives,” he says.

Less than full attention

As with much in technology, some differences may be generational.

Teens are just fine with being together and texting others at the same time, they say.

“There’s no social disruption,” a person says. “But across generational lines, there is major disruption.” Adults “are offended and don’t understand why, when the family is trying to spend time together, teens have to be socially someplace else.”

It’s not just happening with parents and teens.

When someone starts texting at a party or a business meeting, it may be taken as in insult by those physically present. When a parent pulls out the BlackBerry to e-mail the office while at home with the kids, the unfortunate message they send to the children may be that “there is someone I’d rather be interacting with than you.”

There are upsides: The increased use of mobile devices does help keep relationships alive, says someone, who says cellphones allow people to convert otherwise wasted time (such as that spent walking somewhere) to contact with others.

“It’s multitasking in a way that’s good,” that person says. “They need to get someplace, but can have a pleasurable conversation when they’re doing it.”

At the same time, a person says, we can no longer assume we have someones full attention when we’re physically with them. “We’re saying to each other in one way or another that we can always put each other on pause.”

Sharing space

Another person, more tech lovers are setting limits.

No one had to tell someone how consumed by technology their family was. They unplugged for six months, and they recounted the experience in The Winter of Our Disconnect: How Three Totally Wired Teenagers (and a Mother Who Slept With Her iPhone) Pulled the Plug on Their Technology and Lived to Tell the Tale.

“We’re connected to everything but one another and it’s completely normal for this time and place,” that person says.

That person was spurred to act when they looked around the living room and “all I could see were the backs of people’s heads, because they were interacting with their screens.”

At the time, that persons kids were 14, 15 and 18.

“It was the prime of their teenage years — that last moment when we were going to all be together under that one roof,” that person says. “I felt sick at the pit of my stomach that this was going to all dwindle away.”

The person says it was liberating to be free of their devices, even though they loves technology.

Others have these mixed feelings, as well.

“There’s no question cellphones somehow make you reachable 24/7, and I don’t like it,” says a lawyer and mother of two daughters, ages 12 and 7.

“Now, they expect you to answer the phone all the time,” she says. “I think it’s disruptive and disconcerting. But my 12-year-old thinks it’s wonderful to be connected all the time.”

Someone else says times have changed.

“It used to be if someone was talking to themselves, they were usually not in their right state of mind. Nowadays, you realize they have an earpiece and are talking to someone and not really where they are. They’re not connected to the time or place they’re in,” she says.

Despite the persons cellphone, BlackBerry, Kindle and the iPad they share with colleagues at work, someone says adults are having a more difficult adjustment to the world consumed by technology. That person doesn’t thinks kids will.

“They’re so used to it and like everything, they’ll get blasé about it,” the person says.

But, that person has their concerns: “I worry for the kids that they won’t know what it’s like to share a story, to look people in the eyes — to know that sharing a space with someone is all about connecting and not with the technological device.”

Cars

Hey again bloggers or whoever could be reading this blog. And in between reading those current headline news headlines of the day which seem as if they can be completely consuming sometimes these days and times, I somehow find myself blogging about the lincoln town car , the subaru, the subaru outback and a volkswagen car called VW GTI for some reason or another. You know cars don’t you? Those objects usually made out or metal that move people around from place to place, the stuff that that thing called oil is made for. And I have seen a lot of those moving objects around on the roads throughout my travels here on planet earth. And so what was life like before the invention of those cars and the invention of that thing called crude oil used to fuel those objects. What would the world be like without them? And so back to that subject of cars again. Well, if you happen to be looking for one of those people movers for some reason or another, with the invention of that thing called the internet you can now find them with just a website visit away without ever having to leave home, or at least without ever having to leave a computer. And at Car Connection, you can find that car you may be looking for and you can look for those make, model and years that car was made at their website as well. And so back to that subject of the automobile again, and what else is there that I can say about that word car and automobile that has not already been said in time, except that it seems as if the evolution of that first car on the road that was invented has come a long way to today’s current model that is to be found out there on planet earth. And now again with the ages of all things internet, finding that car you may be looking for has never been easier.

The Thousand Years

And when I read those current events of Egypt and the middle east in the headline news these days and times, those thoughts of religion come to mind. And below are some of those sayings that I have come across in my internet travels.

The birth pains increase and the blind multiply.

For the blind cannot see, no matter if Jesus stands right in front of them.

Surely Lord, is there even more to save?
When they only scoff and mock and are filled with evil thoughts?

Surely Lord, you know the hearts of men.
Is there left any man still that can be called to you Lord?

In Jesus Christ.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins
Partial excerpt from The Prophecy of John of Jerusalem

Gold will be in the Blood.
Whoever looks at the sky will calculate how to profit from it.
Whoever enters the Temple will meet merchants.
The Rulers will be money-changers and usurers.
The Sword will defend the Serpent.
But fire will be smouldering.
Each town will be Sodom and Gomorrah.
And the children of the children Will become the fiery swarm. They will raise up the old banners.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins
Man will have peopled the Heavens and the Earth and the Seas with his Creatures.
He will want the powers of God.
He will know no limit.
But each thing will turn against him.
He will stagger like a drunken king.
He will gallop like a blind knight.
And with his spurs he will push his mount into the forest. At the end of the road will be the fall.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins
Towers of Babel will rise in all corners of the Earth.
That one will be Rome and this one will be Byzance.
The fields will be empty.
The only law will be that of oneself and one’s clan.
But the Barbarians will be in the city this time.
There will not be enough bread for everyone.
And games will no longer be sufficient.
Then people with no future Will light great fires.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins
He who speaks of sworn Oaths and of Law Will not be heard. He who preaches the Christian Faith Will lose his voice in the desert.
But everywhere will spread the strong waters Of the infidel religions.
False messiahs will assemble blinded men.
And the armed Infidel will be like never before.
He will speak of justice and of right And his faith will be burning and decisive.
He will take his revenge for the Crusade.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins
The noise of killing will roll like a storm upon the earth There will be barbarians among the soldiers of the last legions.
The infidels will live in the heart of the Holy Cities. Each in turn will be barbarous, faithless and lawless. There will be no more law and order.
Hate will spread like a flame in the dry forest.
Barbarians will massacre soldiers.
The infidels will slit the throats of the faithful. Brutality will be everywhere and the cities will die.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins.
Everyone will know what is happening everywhere on Earth. They will see the child whose bones are piercing his skin. And the one whose eyes are covered in flies.
And the one being hunted like a rat.
But the man who sees will turn away his head.
For he will be thinking only of himself.
That man will give a handful of seeds in charity When he sleeps on full sacks.
And what he gives with one hand he will take back with the other.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins.
Whole regions will be prey to war Beyond the Roman limes and even on the former territory of the Empire,
Men of same cities will cut each others throats.
Here it will be war between tribes and there between religious believers.
The Jews and the children of Allah will unendingly oppose each other And the land of Christ will be their battlefield.
But the infidels will want to defend the purety of their faith everywhere.
And opposite them will be only doubt and power.
Then death will advance everywhere like the flag of the new times.

When the Year Thousand that comes after Year Thousand begins.
Man will think that he is God when he will be nothing more than a baby.
He will hit out, always overcome by anger and jealousy.
But he will be armed with the power that he has taken.
And blind Prometheus will be able to destroy everything around him.
He will remain a dwarf of the soul and he will have the strength of a giant.
He will take enormous strides forward but he will not know which road to take.
His head will be heavy with knowledge.
But he will not know why he lives and dies.
He will be like the fire always gesticulating or the child who whimpers.

If you believe. Will this arm be healed. Peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind.

Egypt

And for the reason that I have been reading about that state of Cairo, Egypt, the Middle East and its unrest in the news a lot lately these past few days, those thoughts of Israel becoming a nation, foreign policy, that seven year peace treaty deal with Israel and that seven year tribulation thing comes to mind. And so I thought to post this “Birds” post again that I posted on this blog sometime a while ago.

Hey again bloggers, or whoever could be reading this blog. So what’s up with all of those birds that have been falling from the sky and fish that have been dying in the sea by the thousands in Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, China, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Australia, UK, Haiti, Wales, Arizona, Texas, Turkey, California, Tennessee, Romania, Maryland, South Carolina, South Dakota, Chicago, New York, Colorado, Ohio, Missouri, California, Kansas, Alabama, the Caspian Sea, the Amazon, and Florida in the past few days according to those headline news of the day. Though this list of places seems to be updating itself daily for some reason or another.

And now what’s up with Egypt. And then those fanaticism thoughts and theories seem to come to mind. Is it the fireworks, the weather, the water, Nostradamus and his Armageddon, apocalyptic and end of the world and time doomsday revelation predictions? Is there some prophet to explain this in prophecy? Does Wikipedia, that internet bible dictionary have an entry for this dead bird, dead fish and Egypt scenario? Is it 2012 and the mayan calendar is ending yet or something? Is it that May 21, 2011 judgement day family radio rapture thing? Is it world war III yet? Is it that wormwood BP Gulf of Mexico Exxon oil spill again? Is it Novartis and that save no man that he may buy or sell except that he have that mark of the beast thing? And what’s that anyway? Is the antichrist here or on its way or something? Is it haarp microwaving the earth? And what’s that again? Is it CERN and the poles shifting? And what’s that all about? Is it chemtrails? What’s that? Is it hydrofracking drilling the earth? Is it super nova solar flares? And what are those yet again? Is it that Hopi prophecy? And what’s a hopi prophecy? Is it the stone age, church age, millennium age, kali yuga age or aquarius age or something? Is it that new world order thing? Is it that Damascus phase where Israel wants or gets their promised land back or something? And what’s that all about? Is it that milky way, center of the universe, planets being in some sort of trinity alignment, black hole, big bang theory thing? And what’s that trinity triangle anyway? The head of Christ or the mark of the beast, or neither? And will every eye see it? Is it that printing of an endless dollar, inflation and a world economy? Is it the order of a new world? And what’s that? Is it that Israel becoming a nation, tribulation and rapture thing? Could it be a united Arab nation? Will pharaoh let his people go? And what’s that seven year peace treaty in Israel deal that was signed in 2010 all about anyway?

And would any of this Egypt or bird stuff be happening if Abraham’s wife didn’t banish Hagar and Ishmael to the desert to die? And did that December 21, 2010 lunar eclipse do something when the crescent moon turned red or something? Is solar radiation on its way to planet earth and its magnetosphere? Is it planet X Nibiru or comet Elenin on the horizon or something? Is Babylon on fire or something? Is it the ufo’s flying around Temple Mount, dome of the rock? And does anyone know what that’s all about. And is Russia, Georgia and that gog and magog thing in this somewhere? And what’s that all about? Is it that mahdi messiah thing. And what’s that? Is it an east west, north south thing? Is it global warming or global cooling? Have the north and south poles shifted yet? And are the birds flying north instead of south in those changing magnetic fields these days and times? Is this the canary in the coal mine aflockalypse and fishapocalypse? Is this a scene on earth from one of those Hitchcock movies? Are the bees still disappearing? And what are the bats doing? Is it technology information overload in a world interconnected via internet? And what about those cows, seals, octopuses, whales, dolphins, the mammals, that are dying in Wisconsin, Vietnam, India, New Zealand, Portugal and maybe other places?

Are these normal and natural occurrences? Is there some some sort of guru to answer this question? What’s up with that? And a third of the sea became blood. If you believe.

Profit

And so this posts seems as if it has something to do with money, gold. And I have heard it said that power and authority breeds corruption. And I have also heard it said that for the love of money is the root of all evil and while some have coveted after they have pierced themselves through with many arrows and sorrows. And what profit does a man have if he gains the whole world and loses his soul. Or something like that. And if only it were possible to exist in life on planet earth for free without that constant struggle for having to attain that thing called money just to exist. And so this post happens to be about Wicked Profits of which I guess has something to do with making money in a pyramid of capitalist society, maybe. And what does that word capitalism mean anyway? And so what else is there that I can say about this word profit that has not already been said in time, except profit also seems as if it has something to do with the money market, wall street and the stock exchange, and also that film “Money Never Sleeps”. And if you happen to be looking for those wicked profits, finding them can be just a website visit away.

Random Thoughts

And for some reason I thought to post a photo of that Mayan calendar in this blog post even though it seems to have nothing to do with this blog post. And in between listening to those latest news headline news of the day, I find myself attempting to blah blog those blagher thoughts that have found themselves accumulating in this bloggerlog that I keep thinking I am going to blog one day in that attempt to maintain content for this blog whenever possible. And so this is that attempt to get rid of some of those scribbled papers with some those blogger thoughts with those topics and comments of:

“Digital death, computer errors kill a person via social security number.” “Parents get paid for ritalin prescriptions for their kids in school.” Hugh?, Psychiatry Kills. Abolish forced involuntary psych cia trick treatment. “Fluorescent light bulbs are mandatory in Canada and incandescent light bulbs are outlawed. “Hugh again? And aren’t those fluorescent lite bulbs Lucifer giving off radiation or something? “Earth has the word death in it.” “New York, that city of sin, I think. Where if you stand still in the middle of the sidewalk you can get run over by the highway of humanity running by and if you stand still in the subway, same thing. “People use embalming fluid for drugs?”, “The Murder Channel, and I think there really is a television program channel called the murder channel, seems as if it can create murders and murderous environments in households across america”. And what has happened to the morals and values of society to where a network can name itself the murder channel. “Security guards in Shoprite in some of those cities in North America stand around with guns? In a supermarket? What’s up with that? “The age of Aquarius, television, vision of evil, life, live, vile” Not sure for what reason I scribbled that random thought down. “R.O.T.C. teaches one to learn to play with guns and rifles in school while wearing one of those green army with badges all over them like uniforms. And what does R.O.T.C. stand for anyway? Oh, according to the internet, Reserve Officer Training Corps, who can have one standing at attention so much while holding one of those rifles unknowingly, that one could pass out. And guns are the worst invention ever. “Kids are taking sex ed classes in 4th grade at ages 14, 11 and even 9 which seems too young and at earlier ages than ever to learn about sex. Overheard that one on a bus. “$1.60 for a cup of hot water at McDonalds?”. How much has inflation risen? And someone was actually charged one dollar and sixty cents for a cup of hot water at McDonalds. They seem to be charging for that hot water as if it is a cup of coffee or something. What’s that all about? I think the cold water there is free though. And what do those two yellow and red arches mean for McDonald’s anyway, anything? “It seems as if people in transit in cars are all staring at cell phones or those blue light gps like telescreens with numbers and letters on them as if in a trance or something. “It seems as if every other commercial on television is a diabetes of diabetes tester commercial advertising those products for diabetes as if they should be fashionable to wear or use or something”. And for what reason does the word diabetes sound like diablo, the devil in Spanish, I think. “Did that oil and gas company BP buy all of the gas stations across that country of North America or something?”. As it seems as if every one of those independent mom and pop gas station shops have all now turned into British Petroleum gas stations. A BP yellow and green seemingly wormwood Nation. “No firearms or other weapons allowed on this property”. Where is one at and what does it mean when one encounters this sign posted on some building somewhere? And guns are the worst invention ever. If only guns could be banished from every human being on planet earth. “Change the law for probation, one year of probation is given for probation equals one year in jail if one day of probation is missed. Or something like that. Is that one of those Rockefeller laws? And what’s a Rockefeller law anyway? In anarchy the rules are there are no rules, I think. And when justice ends tyranny begins. “What’s a Mason Dixon line?”. “Don’t hate the player, hate the game”. Overheard someone say. “Can I travel without a wallet?”. That’s an interesting question to me. And I overheard someone say that one also. For what reason to bail out the auto industry, as if the world needs another car. And for what reason did I write that one down? “Beware of your surroundings, report suspicious behavior to NJ police”. And for some reason this prerecorded seemingly to torture one throughout their whole ride of going ones way reminds me of those big brother “If you see something, say something” seemingly terrorizing its riders in their ears while going their way with seemingly non stop messages throughout their system. And for what reason does that NYC MTA seemingly flood its system with more nypd transit bureau officers than subway riders. If only those bus and transit fares were free. And for what reason again are those machine gun wielding polizei department of New York polizei standing around in that Port Authority Bus Terminal to be found in that city of New York brandishing guns that look like they weigh a million pounds as if awaiting world war three. And then one is supposed to walk by this scenario , keep moving and maybe pretend not to notice a scene reminiscent of a war zone or something. And again, guns are the worst invention ever. If only guns could be banished from every human being on planet earth. “Is there a switch to turn off the world wide web?”. And what would life be like if that world wide web did not exist anymore. Would the world be able to function without that web these days and times?”. “For what reason is the bar b que summer aisle located right next to the Christmas aisle in the store?”. For what reason are Christmas movies on television in the month of September? For what reason is that maybe an advertising, marketing and shopping calendar skipping Thanksgiving and Halloween and speeding up the holidays to where they all run into each other. “Gossip”. What does that word mean? Idle talk, secrets, rumors, gossip tabloids, celebrity gossip fodder. TMZ, Enquirer, soap opera and the page sixes of the world. I heard it said that and so on and so on and so on. Is it true? No one is free when others are oppressed. And so there seems to be one of those long, winding, random thoughts blaghed on this day. And what does this have to do with a No Police State?

The Freebie

If it’s free, then it’s for me, maybe. So I’ve heard someone say throughout my travels here on planet earth. If only everything in life was free. And who’s idea was it that that set up to survive in life required the constant struggle to attain that thing called money to exist as one of those human beings is it anyway? Or something like that. And so this post happens to be about free samples. You know, stuff that you can get for free without having to pay for it, or free stuff. And so apparently at FreeCatcher.com you can find free cell phones some kind of way or another. And that phrase free cell phones that I just typed sounds so interesting that I want to look for that free cell phone as soon as I finish typing this blog entry. And it seems like one can find all kinds of freebie products and samples by mail at that website such as free movies, free games and more from all kinds of different categories such as apparel, computers, food, home, internet, office, travel and a whole lot more. And what better way to get those products for free online without ever having to leave home, or at least without ever having to leave one of those computers. As now finding that freebie can be just a website visit away.
