Honk Festival

Hey Bloggers, there’s a Honk Festival going on this weekend somewhere in the Boston area in that country of America. I know because a friend who went there today with The Himalayas Marching Band says so. And in case you haven’t heard, that Honk Festival at the Davis Square takes place each year and has what seems like a zillion marching bands from all around the world that march in its festival over the weekend. And there is a Honk Parade to reclaim the streets for horns, bikes and feet. And Honk! is also at Oktoberfest in Harvard Square and more.

And some of the bands and organizations marching and participating in this years festival are: Green Streets Initiative, the Open Air Circus, Bikes Not Bombs, the Boston Derby Dames, Veterans For Peace, Livable Streets Alliance, the Puppeteers Cooperative, Vermont’s Bread and Puppet Theater, Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass_Band, Hungry March Band, Brass Liberation Orchestra, MarchFourth Marching Band, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, Himalayas, Titubanda, What Cheer? Brigade, Environmental Encroachment, Bread and Puppet Circus Band, Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble, Yellow Hat Band, Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band, Leftist Marching Band, Seed and Feed Marching Abominable, TriBattery Pops, The Scene Of The Crime Rovers, The Loyd Family Players, Brass Messengers, Original Big Seven Social Aid and Pleasure Club and more. And this festival rocks. Have a great marching band day.

Musical Fashion

And I am not sure what to call the title of this post as I blah blog away on this day, though I do know it has something to do with music and fashion that I would like to blah blog about in this post. And so what’s up with that Mary Poppins look that is on the streets these days when it comes to fashion with all of the clothing being either pleated, puffed, or Mary Poppined up in some sort of way. And those half sleeves that everyone is wearing everywhere on the streets that is to be found in clothing stores everywhere these days, I still can not comprehend as a fashion statement. And every era has its fashion trends I guess. And so that photo above with that trippy looking red color was taken by Sugarcane of East Village Pharmacy, and his cool amazingly high tech camera phone, is of Welf, Kevin, Joe, Kevin, Mike and Chris of Funk Monk, or Monk Funk as I have seen it listed on the Lucky Cat’s website, with their horns and drums performing at The Lucky Cat as part of their Brooklyn Experiments series. And that Lucky Cat restaurant, bar and lounge is doing the go green it’s the new thing thing, as they have vegetarian and vegan food and their delivery containers are made of biodegradable and or compostable materials. And their paper that covered that straw that came with that drink was an eco product made from corn and 100% compostable. And they are helping to save planet mother earth I guess. And they are located on that trendie indie rock scene street of Grand with all of its bars and clubs, in that trendy indie hipster rock scene neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in that City of New York. And their venue rocks. And every decade of New York seems to have it’s era, at least when it comes to real estate. Have a great music and fashion day.

The Deli Magazine

The The Deli Magazine will have an All Day Deli Show during the Dumbo Art Under The Bridge Festival this weekend. I know because their email that they sent says so. And I have been an avid reader every so often of that Deli Magazine and its indie rock, folk scene and more when it comes to being all music all the time. You can read their NYC Top 20 with bands like Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, The Strokes, Brazilian Girls, LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Interpol, The National, We Are Scientists and more. And then you can read about that CMJ 08 Music Marathon and Film Festival that is coming up in October with performances by Broken Social Scene, Deerhoof, Talib Kweli, Kid Sister and hundreds more. And that Deli Magazine usually writes about the coolest bands that play at the coolest places around that City of New York like Cake Shop, Crash Mansion, Knitting Factory, Lit Lounge, Niagara Bar, Sputnik, Union Hall, Annex, Goodbye Blue Monday, Trash Bar, Pete’s Candy Store, Bowery Ballroom, Bowery Poetry Club, Mercury Lounge, Rehab, Stain, Sidewalk Cafe, Union Pool, Arlene’s Grocery, The Shrine, Rockwood Music Hall and just about every other place to be found in New York City where there’s music to be heard. And they have just about what seems like over a zillion of every hand picked artist listed on their website from indie rock, post rock, experimental, loud rock, folk songwriters, mellow indie, lo fi, indie pop, psych rock, electronic, and almost any other music category one can think of. And so that email that Paolo sent on this day reads something like as follows:

Guys, We are having a free Deli show/party on Saturday in Dumbo, during the Art Under the Bridge Festival. There will be something like 21 artists playing from 2pm until night, paintings hanging on the walls and videos at Water Street Lounge that is a yearly event organized by the Dumbo Arts Center, lasting from 7pm on Friday 09.26 through Sunday 09.28. Over the festival weekend, art will be happening everywhere in Dumbo on the streets, sidewalks, storefronts, elevators, lobbies, the water, the waterfront, parks, nooks, crannies, delis, NY Water Taxi, and more. Along with the 65 plus new public art projects, over 100 local artists will open their studios to the public, and downstairs at the Water Street Lounge. On Saturday The Deli and SESAC will showcase 20 plus musical artists and 8 visual artists. Here’s the lineup: Clueless, Mascott, Craig Chin, Kagero, Jessica L Fenton, Lester Von Buween, Maia MacDonald, Pontus Gunve, The City Lights, Myles Turney, The Meanwhiles, Creaky Boards, Alice, Kelly Rae Powell, April Smith, Fresh Air Kids, The Feverfew, Tonearm, 55 Diet Kong,Object, Comandante Zero and Aderbat.

Have a great rockin music day

The Weather

And with a hurricane approaching the country of America, Yahoo Headlines are starting to read topics like “With a historic evacuation of 1.9 million people from the Louisiana coast complete, guntoting police and National Guardsmen stood watch for a hurricane,” and CNN headlines that read “New Orleans imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew”. And guns are the worst invention of a death industry ever. If only guns could be abolished from every human being on the face of planet earth, as if property is worth more than human life. And what would happen if no one lost their lives to gun violence today, tomorrow and thereafter, would the media and advertising industry be out of a job? And it seems to be a vicious cycle of a beast that feeds upon itself. Is another world possible. Where is the world headed. Is there hope for the world and society in these days and times. And even when it seems as if the world is falling down all around me, I still find myself blah blogging sometimes. And for some reason this verse from the bible comes to mind on this day, “So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter”. And for some reason I did not make it to that “Music Now” music event at the Brecht Forum that is taking place on this night with the Peoples Revolutionary Party and musicians The Black August Quintet with Ras,Walden Wimberley,Rashid Bakr(Charles Downs),Larry Roland,Matt Lavelle, On,Tor Yochai Snyder,Andre Martinez, The Seth Meicht Trio, James Keepnews,Mike Golub,Welf D.,Tom Chess,Matt Lavelle,Todd Nicholson,Daniel Carter,Nick Gianni and Ras Moshe. And I wanted to post a photo of those musicians performing there on this blog on this day in my blogaholicness. And that photo is not here as I am not there for some reason or another. Have a great music day.

Music

And while I am on the topic of events, there seems to be events, events, and more events going on. And Brazilian Girls, that really cool awesome band, has an album titled “New York City” that is to be found now. And I know because their website says so. And it seems to be a Nublu, Zebulon, and The Himalayas family and friends event with artists like Baaba Maal,Clark Gayton,Michael Irwin,Doug Wieselman,Kenny Wollesen,Didi Gutman,Richard Marriott,Mauro Refosco,Mike Williams,Aaron Johnston,Sabina Sciubba,Steven Bernstein,Byron Isaacs,Jesse Murphy,Héctor Castillo,Daniel Jodocy,Jennifer Harris,Jonathon Haffner,Dalius Naujo, William Paden Hensley, Chris Athens,Hollis King,Kenji Shimoda,Dahlia Ambach Caplin, Héctor Castillo,Dan Bora,Michael Trepagnier,Adam Thompson,Anne Metz, and Petar Timotic. Zebulon

Hey Bloggers, Zebulon is having a lot of concerts and performances. I know because this pink flyer on this table says so. And it is a pink flyer with their monthly July schedule with artists and musicians like Pogo in Togo, Noveller, Willy Wierd and Sister Resistor, Andy Friedman and The Other Failures, The Defibulators,Kaoru Watanabe, Tatsuya Nakatani,Kakande ,Famoro Dioubate and Friends, Guinee brooklyn, Kaneng Lolang Zozo Afro Beat,Moisturizer, Burnt Sugar,Lucibel Crater, twi the humble feather plus Benjamin wetherill,Ryan Sawyer,Susan Alcorn, Patrick Holmes,Sharon Van Etten plus Boutros Effendi, Drew Victor, Rock Banned, Nick Panken, and the Tougarake,The Waaw Band, the Dutch East India Company, Mamma Macabre, Die Haifische,Taylor Ho Bynum, Abraham Gomez Delgado project, Michael Attias, Megachurch, Melanie Moser and the eleventh hour band, Stagger Back Brass Band, Accordion Death Squad,Ivana XL , Airwaves , Luke Temple , Lizzy Grant, Cleve Pozar, Cooper Moore, Darius Jones, The SuperPowers brooklyn, Effi Briest,Marques Tolliver and the Sometimes, Anna K Jarosz,Paraguaylofi,Moonengineer,Glasser plus Shock Cinema,Baye Kouyate , Eli, Samba and Friends presents Mighty AfroAmerico Percussion,Meta and the Cornerstones,Unicornicopia Natalie Weiss plus Skeleton,Taylor Ho Bynum, Abraham Gomez, project in sounds,Polka Madre, Nicky,Jess, Tyler , Jordi and friends, DJ Jaiko Suzuki, Dub Is A Weapon,Casperous Vine,Spanish Prisoners, miles benjamin anthony robinson, Rasp Thorne Presents, Stuart Bogie and Friends, Super Human Happiness, Clinton Van Gemert,Container plus Sonido Chongo Bicycleta, Paris Suit Yourself Holly Miranda and more in Brooklyn.
And how exactly this pink flyer wound up on my friends table, I am not exactly sure as maybe they went to that club and bar at some point and got it there, as I have also found myself there every once in a blue moon as one of those New York City dwellers looking for entertainment nightlife, jazz and other music. And Kenny and that group “The Himalayas” played there at some point in time also, with their orchestra and horns that’s a great marching sound indeed. And so I found myself visiting Zebulon’s MySpace page that is listed on this flyer also, and that page rocks. And if you are not exactly who, what or where a Zebulon is, at least the name sounds interesting, almost like that other really cool club Nublu in the East Village of New York. And what’s a Zebulon anyway, does that word mean or translate into something else in another language. And does that internet bible dictionary Wikipedia have an entry for that. And Zebulon is this really cool happening place in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn and they are all music all the time. Have a great music day.

The Tea Lounge

And so I somehow found myself winding up at this place called the Tea Lounge that’s this really cool lounge in Park Slope, Brooklyn with seemingly a ton of couches everywhere and people all sitting there looking at their laptops all the time drinking tea and lots of tea. And that place seems so cool that I could just sit there all day and night blah blogging away on some laptop, seemingly if they have free wi fi at least. And that place is located across the street from another place that I have heard of called the Park Slope Food Co op, or is that the Park Slope food coop? Anyway, and so my friends band “Funk Monk” was playing there that night, and so was this other band called “The Bird Hive Boys”. And Funk Monk was a jazzy night, and Bird Hive Boys was a bluesy, bluegrass sort of night that night. And their music rocked. And then there is another story of gentrification, almost genocide of yet another long time establishment that has fallen to the housing crisis of New York in this rent going through the roof, one needs ten roommates to survive era. Someone said that the Tea Lounge on 7th Avenue, or is it 10th Street will be closing at the end of this month. And will this place be replaced by yet another bank. And does the housing crisis in New York, where even the yuppies can no longer afford the rent, reflect the state of the nation and the state of the world. And there seems to be overdevelopement and a wrecking ball going through this town so fast that I can not keep track, as a new building seems to go up or out of business, or opens for business and seems to appear and disappear out of nowhere that was not there the week before, each week I walk down most any block of this city. And the landscape is changing. And it seems as if someone should keep track and write some sort of obituary for all of the businesses that are losing and have lost their lives so fast in this town for usually the sake of money. And CBGB marked an end of an area along with a host of other merchants and individuals in this city and its housing crisis of the decade 2000. And it seems as if every decade in real estate in New York has its era and is different, as New York seems to be ever changing, and the only thing constant is change. And what does the next decade hold for New York and its real estate, if anything. And will squatting and the land of the free ever arise again. And for some reason that phrase “Class War, Class War, Class War on the Poor” comes to mind. Long Live The Lower East Side. And in other thoughts I read that there is a recession and a depression, a foreclosure crisis, Uncle Sam is going broke with the European Union and the food is disappearing, and the animals are dying and disappearing and the globe is warming, and the climate is changing, and there are wars, wars, and rumors of wars, and the world seems to be spinning out of control. Is there hope for the world. And what if anything, does this have to do with a No Police State? Peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind. Have a great music day.

A Nublu Anniversary

Hey Bloggers, that really cool club nublu , located in New York’s East Village that I have found my way to every so often over time, must be having their 6 years annual anniversary party again this year and this week. I know because I received one of those MySpace emails from elodieO with a title that read “elodieO/Nublu Anniversary week/thursday june 26th”, and a passage that reads ” elodieO at Nublu as Part of Nublu Anniversary week followed by Didi Gutman’s (Brazilian Girls) new extravaganza plus Inflagranti, Thursday, june 26th at NUBLU9.
